Positive interactions strengthen relationships between adult and child and help fuel the child’s development. Positive interactions are facilitated through an understanding of “regulation”, using the lens of sensory processing and the DIR® model. The DIR® model is a developmental approach that supports the child by connecting with them based on their individual differences, strengths, and interests. The DIR® model was created through the science of human development and psychology. The “Application Guide” is a step-by-step curriculum that provides manageable worksheets, reference charts, and an intervention tool called “The Plan.” Assessment: Users will complete questionnaire worksheets for both adult and child on the topics of: individual differences in sensory processing, developmental capacities and strengths, interests, and challenges. Reference Charts: Assessment data is summarized into reference charts. These charts are a summary of learning and can be used as a communication tool with other caregivers in the child’s life, for example, teachers and daycare providers. The reference charts give a picture of understanding for the child and provide strategies for supporting and connecting the child. Intervention: The understanding created through assessment, for both child and adult, is applied to a plan to use moving forward. This intervention is titled: The 5 Step Plan: Facilitate Positive Interactions to Facilitate Development and Strengthen the Relationship. This guide was written to be used by parents, caregivers, and professionals. Users do not need to have a background in DIR® or sensory processing. This application guide, by its individualized application, supports user understanding for all concepts. Read more
