Les Vers de la Mort ( Verses of Death ) by Robert le Clerc d'Arras has long been by the success of Helinand de Froidmont's verses. Nevertheless, this copious work (3744 verses) touched upon varied themes, contained a vast repertory of metaphors, original comparisons, and used an exceptionally rich vocabulary. While Annette Brasseur and Roger Berger could take satisfaction in simply editing this text, they wished to offer several keys for its interpretation: transposition in modern French, rich annotation, an extensive glossary, and a detailed study of the language. Additionally, they have succeeded in exactly dating these Verses and in relating a part of the poet's life, well inserted into Thirteenth century society in Arras. They have also proved that he was the author of the hitherto considered anonymous poem Li loenge Nostre Dame , which like the preceding work is unfinished. French text. Read more
